Delete empty or duplicate files with Duplicate File Finder

Files with 0 bits tend to deceive/mislead the user; the duplicate ones take up space on your hard drive. Solution: delete them.

Duplicate File Finder 3.4 is a freeware utility that will scan your hard drive for empty or duplicate files.

Start the application by double-clicking on the executable; Duplicate File Finder doesn’t require installation. Now you have to select which partition the program should scan; click “Add path” and write “C:\”, for example. Check the Include Empty Files in Search so you can also remove the empty files. Start the scan on the desired hard disks with “Start Search”. This process will take a considerable amount of time.

You can get rid of all duplicate files with the “Delete all duplicates” command, if you are not messing with protected system files.

Now, you should delete empty files using View and delete empty files. It’s true that you won’t save space, but why should you have empty files on your system?

Upload files via FTP with FileZilla

FileZilla is a free application available both as a client and server. It occupies very little space, but despite that, this FTP client offers many features.

The interface is easy-to-use, with everything being where it should be. You have a site manager at your disposal, where you can save your web servers and login details. If you want to upload or download a file, you can just drag&drop it where you wish; remote editing is supported.

FileZilla is able to upload large files; you can close the program, so you can resume the transfers later. Everything is configurable, including speeds.

Version 3.1.0.1 fixes many bugs, even a vulnerability that could allow an attacker to trick FileZilla in thinking that some SLL/TLS transfers were successful.

What’s new in FileZilla version 3.1.5.1:

Clearing private data no longer crashes if quickconnect bar is hidden
Update remote directory tree if deleting a subdirectory
Fix parsing of HTTP chunk lengths for the update downloader
Reduce memory consumption of remote directory tree
Rewrite the code that added local directories to the queue. New one is faster and avoids some potentially thread-unsafe behaviour of the old code

What’s new in FileZilla version 3.1.6:

Automatically refresh remote directory listing if queue finishes successfully
Speed up refresh of remote directory listing if adding files during uploads
Connections no longer time out waiting on a directory listing getting retrieved by a different connection
Number of files were not updated if deleting remote files

7-zip file archiver

7-zip utility is considered a great alternative to file archivers like WinZip or WinRar. The last two can be used for a limited period, after that you must pay.

First of all, the program is lightweight; it occupies less than 1MB.

Formats supported by the 7-zip 4.57 archiver include RAR, ZIP, CAB (Microsoft cabinet files), ARJ and even .7z – 7-zip’s very own format. Most of the options we see at the commercial archivers are not forgotten by Igor Pavlov (creator of 7-zip), like self-extracting archives (SFX). This program can unpack corrupt or damaged archives with little problem.

High compression ratio is considered another key-feature, but time is sacrificed in order to build the archive. Lastly, you can’t pack in RAR.
