Free Internet security from WOT

As you may have noticed, I have implemented a new widget in the left sidebar (update: the widget is located on our Friends page). I’m talking about WOT, or Web of Trust. Here is a little description:

WOT is a free Internet security add-on for your browser. It will keep you safe from online scams, identity theft, spyware, spam, viruses and unreliable shopping sites. WOT warns you before you interact with a risky website. It’s easy and it’s free.

A couple of months ago, I was browsing the Mozilla Firefox add-ons website and saw Web of Trust. I’ve read about the add-on; WOT received very good feedback from different users, so I’ve decided to try it out. Basically, when you visit a website, you’ll see a circle near the address bar: green means a good, reliable website, while a red circle denotes a site with possible adware, spyware or other malicious software.

The great thing about Web of Trust is that we, the users, get to rate the websites. For each one, you can view its “scorecard” with the following components:

trustworthiness
vendor reliability
privacy
child safety

Each user can also leave a comment where he can talk about his experience with the respective site.

Safari 3.1.2 – the browser from Apple

Safari, the free internet browser for MAC OS X is now available on Windows. Let’s see what Apple has been up to…
They’re saying that Safari is the fastest browser on any platform, loading pages up to 1.7 times faster than Mozilla Firefox 2 and almost 2 times faster than Internet Explorer 7, pretty impressive if you ask me.

In my opinion, Safari fits perfectly with this expression “Simple is better, simple is more.”. If you’re looking for a browser with all kinds of add-ons and features, then this is not the best choice for you. As I’ve said above, Safari presents a “blazing performance” – it is very fast. The interface is simple, easy-to-use; many of the buttons that you remember from other browsers are not displayed by default, but you can easily customize the toolbar to suit your preferences.

Bookmarking a page can be done in a couple of clicks, tabbed browsing is available and the pop-up blocker is there for you. Apple comes with a feature called Forms AutoFill; basically it fills the forms with saved information you have previously typed. Unfortunately, there are some bugs meaning your forms might not get completed as you’ve expected. The built-in RSS reader provides you with the latest news or articles that you are interested in. With Safari you can resize text areas in order to fit your needs.

Another important feature is Private Browsing: in just 2 clicks you can surf the internet with absolutely nothing being saved on your computer (websites visited, cookies, searches). Safari’s font-smoothing option allows you to set how font is rendered, depending on your type of display monitor. This freeware browser features full support for CSS (Cascading Style Sheets).

A drawback of Safari might be considered the high memory usage and as mentioned before, customization can be improved.

Browse the Internet with Mozilla Firefox 3

At last, the latest version of this popular Internet browser has been released and I would say that all the waiting has paid off.

First of all, there are over 15000 fixes and features as stated by Mozilla. The interface is easy-to-use and the design is significantly improved. Firefox 3 loads pages very fast than many other browsers, using less memory than previous versions. Your passwords can be saved easily, so you don’t have to type them over and over again.

One crucial feature represents security improvements; Mozilla’s browser warns you if a website that you are visiting is a known fraud. When you download a file, Firefox, with the help of your antivirus, is able to scan it for potential threats. When you type an address, Firefox’s “Awesome Bar” will display some possible choices. You’ve found a website on the internet that you like? Simply click the little star in the address bar and you’ve bookmarked it.

There are many add-ons developed for Firefox 3 to suit your needs.
