Foxit Reader 2.3 is a freeware application that lets you view PDF documents. The program is similar to Adobe Reader, but offers many other features and improvements.

First of all, the download is less than 3MB and the “installation” takes about a second.

Foxit Reader is much faster than Adobe Reader; when you double-click a PDF file, the application opens before you can say “foxit reader”. You don’t have to wait for a splash screen or anything like that. The interface is clean and easy-to-use, pretty much the same as Adobe’s. You can also change the language to your preferred one.

Features available in version 2.3:

• very fast
• Foxit Reader presents tabbed PDF file browsing, meaning you can read multiple PDF’s at the same time
• annotations tools allow you to make notes and draw graphics in the PDF document
• with the help of the Snapshot tool, you can print the selected area in a few clicks
• you can activate automatic scrolling, therefore you don’t have to scroll or press the down arrow all the time
• Foxit Reader offers multimedia support (audio/video)
• a lot of bugs have been fixed and the memory usage is very low

Tip: if you are annoyed by the advertisement in the upper-right corner of Foxit Reader, simply click View and uncheck Advertisement.

TopOCR3 (OCR stands for optical character recognition) is a free application that lets you manipulate the text within an image. You can edit the text in program as common as Notepad.

Like any software, TopOCR is not perfect, but there are some tweaks that will help you get the most out of this product. Before trying to recognize the text within an image, you should modify the properties of the picture, like color, contrast and other. After TopOCR has done its job, you can play with the text in order to make it suit your needs. The file can be saved as an HTML or PDF document. As a bonus, you can even convert a piece of text into an audio format; this feature is called TextToSpeech.

In the picture below, I have scanned a page and in my opinion the results are amazing. Why pay a couple of hundred dollars when you have TopOCR3?
