Notepad++ – source code editor

Notepad plus plus is free software under GPL license (General Public License). This application will fulfill the basic tasks of the ordinary notepad and more. You can use it as a source code editor for a variety of programming languages like Pascal, C/C++, C#, ASP, PHP, Javascript, Python, Ruby and so on. Notepad plus plus is established on Scintilla, another free source code editor, and was written in C++.  It runs on all versions of Windows. This software is known for its high execution speed.

Notepad plus plus offers syntax highlighting which I found very useful when coding; see the screenshot below. You can also change the colors manually in order to fit your needs. Another effective feature is the drag-and-drop support that lets you edit your documents fast. Notepad++ is available in many languages and you can also help translating, if you wish to.
